Designing the Clemson Alumni Annual Report started with developing an asymmetrical 6-column grid system, which has a more magazine-like feel with content more centered on the spread, allowing for a natural negative space to exist near the edges. This 6-column grid system allows for a wide variety of layouts while keeping consistent gutter spaces between columns and creating a sense of uniqueness to each spread while maintaining the underlying structure.
Each of the four main event features (Welcome Back Festival, Ring Ceremony, Alumni Reunion and the Distinguished Service Awards) began with a full spread photo that was given increased saturation and a darkened vignette to make them more visually impactful. These are followed by a spread of their related content while the Distinguished Service Award spread with its five main winners provided an opportunity to create a standout spread of reverse type set on a darkened version of a stage photo. Small orange borders at the base of each event photo as well as the thin rails and use of decorative elements add create an overall clean, hierarchy that is easy to follow.
This piece was produced in a small quantity on an HP Indigo 7800 Digital Press which allowed us to not only produce a high quality piece but we were also able to include a gloss clear as a fifth color to enhance the individual photos and add a special effect Tiger Rag pattern to the large orange areas on the inside/outside covers.
